Reading Champions

At High Green Primary School, we are passionate about reading. From our high-quality Little Wandle phonics in F2 and KS1 to our exciting Book Vending Machine, reading sits at the heart of school life. Our Reading Champions help celebrate and strengthen this culture, inspiring every child to love books and read for pleasure.

Who Are Our Reading Champions?

Reading Champions are enthusiastic and confident readers from Key Stage 2 who enjoy sharing their love of books with others. They act as reading role models and help ensure that every child at HGPS has access to engaging, diverse and high-quality texts.

What Do They Do?

Reading Champions support our whole-school reading culture through a range of important responsibilities:

  • Reading With Younger Children:
They read regularly with pupils across school to build fluency, support confidence and model expressive reading.

  • Promoting Our Little Wandle Phonics Approach:
Champions help celebrate the progress children make through Little Wandle and encourage younger pupils to practise their reading at home and in school.

  • Recommending Books:
They share book suggestions in classes, assemblies and the library, helping children choose stories linked to their interests, topics and reading level.

  • Supporting Our Book Vending Machine:
Reading Champions help promote the vending machine, celebrate children who earn tokens and recommend new titles to be included.

  • Looking After the School Library:
They help keep the main library tidy and welcoming—organising shelves, supporting book returns and creating displays that highlight new or diverse books.

  • Ensuring Diversity & Representation:
Champions help check that our library and classroom reading areas include a wide range of books that reflect different cultures, families, experiences and voices.

  • Linking Books to Class Topics:
They support teachers in keeping reading areas current and topic-linked, ensuring children have high-quality texts related to what they are learning.

  • Leading Reading Events:
Reading Champions help with reading challenges, World Book Day, story sessions and other events that make reading fun.

  • Sharing Pupil Voice:
Champions meet with staff to share ideas, request new books and help ensure our reading spaces stay fresh and exciting.

Why This Matters

Our Reading Champions play a vital role in nurturing confident, enthusiastic readers. Their leadership helps ensure that reading at HGPS is joyful, inclusive and inspiring—from Little Wandle phonics to the thrill of choosing a new book from the vending machine.
