Year 5 Mission Statement

In Year 5 we aim to be AWESOME! There are lots of different ways we can do this, but we promise to act on what we feel are some of the most important ones:
• We promise to be respectful to other people, other people’s belongings, and ourselves. This includes being polite and friendly towards EVERYONE, all the time.
• As good citizens of the world, we will be kind to everyone, regardless of their backgrounds or whether they are our friends or not.
• We promise to be encouraging to our classmates, and help them be the best that they can be.
• We promise to take risks, in order to challenge ourselves. We will push ourselves beyond our comfort zones, and try new things.
• When things are difficult, or haven’t gone well, we will be resilient and try again. We will do our best to bounce back positively from knockbacks.
• We will be focused in lessons and always try our best. We will listen, and not speak when other members of the class are speaking.
• We are committed to working hard all of the time.
• We will contribute to an environment where we can learn effectively, and have great fun!

Hello and welcome to Year 5!

Mr Baker teaches Year 5 and currently is ably assisted by Mrs Clarke. This year, we aim to have a hands-on approach to learning, and really try to immerse ourselves in the topics we study. It’s key that children experience learning and don’t just ‘do’ learning. As well as the written curriculum, we aim to develop students who are independent learners and who will become well-rounded, responsible and caring citizens of the world. Also in Year 5, we have a class pet: a Leopard Gecko called Gary. We all help to feed him each week and clean out his enclosure.

During term 1, our focus is on History and Art & Craft. We will learn about what it was like to alive during World War 2. We will investigate what it was like to have been an evacuee, what the Blitz was, rationing, clothes and much, much more. Our trip for this term will be to Eden Camp in North Yorkshire. Where possible, we will link our work in English, Maths and Science to our topic to created meaningful learning experiences.

In Term 2, our focus is Geography through our topic, Backpacking. We will look at some major cities and landmarks around the world that people may like to visit. We will also examine the effects of tourism, and the effect this has on the environment and local communities.

Term 3 sees a focus on Science, and our topic is Far & Beyond – a space themed unit investigating our solar system. We will look at the planets in detail, as well as try and understand the relative size of bodies within the solar system. We will learn about the forces at work, and learn about space travel during our visit to the National Space Centre in Leicester.
