I am Mr Gregory the Class Teacher, our Teaching Assistant is Mrs Ward, and not to forget our class pet – Motley the Corn Snake!

We do lots of exciting learning in Year 1 and follow a creative  curriculum that is adapted to the children’s interests.

In the Autumn term we understand that it can be a big step up from Reception for some children and that is why we incorporate the Focused Provision in the class to help with the transition process. We start off with a two week mini project called “Boggarts”. Boggarts are mystical and mischievous creatures that can only be seen by the children! The children design and make their own Boggart and then build a new house for them in the Woodland, where they will live.

We then move onto our second topic “Raiders of the Lost Toys”. During The Indiana Jones inspired topic we explore how everyday processes, such as communication and transport, have changed since our Parents and Grandparents were our age! We even learn how to write messages in Morse Code and make our own carrier pigeons!

In the spring term our topic is “Dungeons and Dragons”. Throughout this topic we learn all about castles and how they evolved to be harder to attack! We also make our own dragon puppets!

During Summer Term our topic is “Carnival of the Animals” inspired by Camille Saint- Saens. We learn about how music can be used to help set an atmosphere and describe how an animal can move. We look at the life cycles of a number of different animals and we even go on an amazing trip to Chester Zoo!

We always like to celebrate the children’s hard work and dedication so every day we chose a star of the day. On Fridays we chose a hand writer, mathmagician and reader of the week. For the weekend one lucky child will get to take home Gordon the Giraffe and will be able to fill in his special diary to show what a wonderful weekend they have had together.
