Year 5 blog April 2019

What a busy time we are having in year 5!

In English this month, the children read a story opening called Alien invasion. They learnt how to use expanded noun phrases and modal verbs. Then we imagined what could have happened when the characters were taken by the aliens and they wrote the end of the story. They have shown that they are able to use really exciting vocabulary in order to use description to build a picture in the mind of the reader. They also showed some great imagination.

This month in maths the children learned to round decimals to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place. They also solved problems involving decimals. Latterly, the children have been multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. They also solved problems using those skills.

Topic/ Science

The children thought about the new topic of the Earth and Space and wrote questions about the things they wanted to find out about. This week they looked at scientific evidence to support the idea that the Earth was either flat or spherical. Then they wrote what they believe to be true, given evidence to support it. We will move on to look at the planets.

They have also looked at the life cycles of different creatures and begun to think about how they are similar/ different.

We have looked at virtual art galleries and will be trying to create our own. The children looked carefully at The National Gallery and then listed the features that they thought made it good.

This term, the children will be learning the skills involved in order to play rounders. On Wednesdays, with Helen, they are learning some athletics skills.

The children had a fantastic time when they completed their Bikeability training. All children are now able to ride a bike more safely and have an understanding of how to check their bikes to ensure they are roadworthy.

Space Centre

You have received the details of our visit to The National Space Centre on June 4th. Please could you return the consent and the payment as soon as possible. Details of pick up and drop off times will be given nearer the time.

Mystery at Magpie Manor.

Our play rehearsals are underway and I am sure it will be an exciting production.

Tickets are 3 per child for either Tuesday 11th June at 6 pm and Thursday 13th June at 9.30am.

There is no cost for the tickets but we will be holding a raffle at each performance to raise money for our class charity, MacMillan Cancer Care. (Any donations of prizes for these raffles will be gratefully received.)

I am so grateful to the many parents who have offered their time and artistic skills to ensure we have props and scenery for this endeavor.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
