Year 2 January 2019 blog

Hello everyone, welcome back to this month’s Y2 blog.

Children have been enjoying their ‘chocolate’ topic so far. They have been learning about the history of chocolate and where chocolate comes from as well as designing their own sweet wrappers. During music week, we made African drums and wrote music using chocolate bar names as notes! (Mars, Kitkat, Curlywurly) and then we had a go at playing each others compositions.

In English, we have taste tested Willy Wonka’s new ‘Sunshine Drop’ sweets and wrote our own reviews of them using expanded noun phrases and conjunctions to describe the experience from first seeing the sweets to smelling them to putting them in our mouths. We have also been reading Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and looking at the different characters. Next, we will write our own character descriptions and then invent a character of our own.

In Maths the children have been learning about division. The children are understanding that in order to answer division questions effectively and accurately you need to know your times tables to help you. They have been practising the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We have been using drawings of ‘groups’  to help us work out the answers and some children have moved on to jumping on a number line to represent their groups. Next we will be moving on to 2d shape. We will learn the names of shapes as well as describing their properties.
