Year 5 class blog – December 2018

What a fantastic first half term we’ve had in year 5. The children have continued to work really hard and are making great progress.

English and topic

In English, the children finished their Howard Carter diaries and then moved on to letter writing. We linked this learning with our World War 1 topic and the children found out what it was like for the soldiers in the trenches in World War 1. Then they wrote letters home in the role of the soldiers, to let their families know how they were getting on.

In maths, the children learned how to find the next few terms in number sequences. They also multiplied and divided numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. They also learned to recognise multiples of different numbers.

The children have finished their football skills learning and will be moving on to other skills after the holidays. The PE session on Wednesdays will be moving to the afternoon instead of the morning. Please ensure that you child has their full indoor and outdoor PE kit on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays. They must have a pair of trainers as they are not allowed to wear pumps for outdoor sessions.

We are continuing to learn about forces and will finish this unit after the holiday. The children will learn about gravity, air resistance and water resistance. This unit involves a lot of experiments.

Topic and Art

The children found out about Egyptian hieroglyphics and used them to make their calendars. They also found out how Pharaohs were mummified and began to make canopic jars out of clay. We need to finish these after the holidays.

Have a lovely Christmas break and I look forward to seeing the children on Tuesday 8th January 2019 when they return to school.
